Four individuals were injured on December 31 and three of those were airlifted to hospitals with life-threatening injuries after an accident involving a garbage truck and a pickup truck occurred in Fayette County.
Reports coming from Fayette County officials revealed that authorities were notified of a vehicular accident at 6:43 a.m. on Highway 18. Responding personnel stated that the garbage truck, driven by a 23-year-old man, was in the process of reversing onto a farm drive from the highway when a pickup truck collided with it.
The driver of the garbage truck was taken to the hospital for minor injuries. A second man was outside the garbage truck collecting trash when he was struck by a vehicle in the collision. He and the two occupants of the pickup truck were all later airlifted to hospitals in critical condition.
The driver of the garbage truck was issued a citation for improperly backing up on a highway, and the driver of the pickup truck will also be issued a citation for driving with a suspended license.
On Wednesday, Joseph Pink, 71, of Madison, WI, died after being hit in a car crash earlier in the week in Waterloo, IA.
Garth Beatty, 70, of Vinton, IA, was driving a pickup truck with a trailer attached in the southbound lanes of Highway 63 when he hit Pink’s car as he was crossing the highway.
According to police, Beatty’s pickup flipped and both cars ended up in a nearby ditch. Beatty was rushed to a nearby Waterloo hospital.

At 8am on Monday morning, just north of Lebanon in southeast Iowa, a 17 year old male driver collided with a school bus driving on County Road V-64.
The teen was driving southbound on County Road V-64 when he collided with a Van Buren Community school bus travelling northbound driven by Steven J. Duke, 47. The boy was rushed to Van Buren County Hospital with serious injuries, and was later flown to University Hospitals in Iowa City.
The students on the school bus were taken to Van Buren County Hospital as a precaution. Duke was unharmed and the students did not have serious injuries.

On Saturday at 3:50pm, Ryan J. Siebenbrodt, 30, of Des Moines, was flown from the scene of a crash where his Chevrolet Impala collided with an empty semi-trailer.
Siebenbrodt was cut out of his car by the rescue team at Main Street and County Line Road in unincorporated Kaneville Township in Kane County. He was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, and is in good condition. Walter J. Seilheimer, 66, of Sandwich, IL was the driver of the semitrailer, and was not injured.
According to police, the crash is still under investigation and details will be disclosed at a later time.

According to authorities, an ambulance-truck accident in Boone County on Thursday left two injured and two dead.
The incident happened on Highway 30 near Beaver around 11:30 a.m. A 75-year-old Carroll man was being transported from St. Anthony’s Regional Hospital to another facility.
The ambulance had its emergency lights on and was passing vehicles. When it came behind the semi-trailer truck, the truck driver attempted to move into the right lane to allow the ambulance to pass. The driver of the ambulance moved into the right lane at the same time, crashing into the back of the truck.
Both the 75-year-old patient and a 53-year-old nurse in the ambulance were killed, while a paramedic and the ambulance driver both sustained critical injuries. They were taken to Mercy Medical Center and Greene County Medical Center.
Police have identified a woman killed Sunday in a two-motorcycle accident as a 26-year-old Des Moines resident. She was riding as a passenger on her 35-year-old husband’s motorcycle when the crash occurred.
Their motorcycle crashed into the back of another motorcycle being driven by a 55-year-old Altoona man around 6:25 p.m. near the 400 block of East 30th Street. The 55-year-old man was uninjured but the woman was thrown from the couple’s motorcycle and pronounced dead at the scene. Her husband was transported to Mercy Medical Center with a broken leg.
None of the riders were wearing helmets. Police are still determining whether or not alcohol or drugs were involved in the crash.

A man from Dumont was injured in a two-vehicle accident near Greene, Thursday morning.
According to officials with the Butler’s County Sheriff’s Department, 64 year-old William V. Thompson was injured in an accident shortly after 9:30 a.m. Thursday at the intersection of 110th Street and Jay Avenue. Police say Thompson pulled into the passing lane on 110th Street, attempting to navigate passed a vehicle driven by 55 year-old Craig S. Frevert, or Greene. Frevert was attempting to make a left turn onto Jay Avenue, according to a report from the Iowa State Patrol.
Iowa State Troopers say Thompson was transported to Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa for treatment after the accident. He was later transferred to St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota. Thompson is listed in serious condition, according to a hospital spokesman.
The Greene fire and ambulance departments assisted the State Patrol at the scene.

A woman from Memphis was killed in a car accident Thursday in Iowa.
According to officials with the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 52 year-old Karen E. Leon, of Memphis, Missouri, was traveling east on U.S. 136 shortly after 5:00 a.m. when the crash occurred. Troopers say Leon’s 1999 Lexus crossed the center line of the road way, into oncoming traffic. Police say Leon’s vehicle moved directly into the path of a westbound pickup truck driven by 60 year-old William Merideth of Keokuk, Iowa.
According to a report from the Scotland County Coroner’s Office, Leon was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. She was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
Merideth sustained minor injuries and was transported to Scotland County Memorial Hospital for treatment. Police could not comment on the nature of his injuries.
The accident remains under investigation.

A four-car accident that occurred outside of a Midas Muffler store on Martin Luther King parkway may have ironically been caused by faulty brakes. An 86-year old Des Moines woman says she lost control of her car on the MLK parkway, sending her crashing through the store parking lot, damaging three vehicles and striking a tree. Police are still investigating the cause of an accident that occurred at around 12:45 a.m. on Friday, when a car driven by a 21-year old West Des Moines man crashed into a suburban home. The man apparently lost control of his vehicle, struck a curb and went crashing into a home in Glen Oaks, a gated community in West Des Moines. Authorities suspect that alcohol may have been a factor in the crash.
