Iowa City may install traffic cameras to catch speeders

An Iowa City Council has announced that they will be doing some research in order to decide whether they will install cameras at traffic lights to catch people who are speeding and running red lights.

Further research including installation proposals and determining who will operate the cameras is being done by council members. The police chief of Iowa City spoke to the council in favor of the cameras.

He said that the cameras will be a safety benefit for residents and explained that other cities in the area have seen driving behavior change as a result of the cameras. The other city, Cedar Rapids, saw a 40 percent decrease in accidents near intersection that had traffic cameras.
