2012 Iowa motorcycle fatalities reach 11 after weekend crashes

This weekend in Iowa, four people lost their lives in motorcycle accidents.

A 42-year-old Monticello man lost control of his bike and was later pronounced dead at a Dubuque hospital. A 57-year-old man and his wife also lost their lives when their motorcycle collided with a pickup truck on Iowa Highway 92. A fourth motorcyclist passed away as well  in Worth County.

Since the beginning of 2012, there have now been 11 motorcycle fatalities in the state of Iowa. This number is larger than it was during the same period in 2011, and the motorcycle administrator for the Iowa Department of Transportation believes that the warmer weather is connected with the higher number of motorcyclists who are out on the road at this time of the year.

Motorcyclist injured after Des Moines crash

A motorcyclist is in the hospital with serious injuries after he was struck by a motor vehicle last Friday night in Des Moines, Iowa.

The accident occurred on the corner of Meadow Chase Lane and Bloomfield. The driver of the vehicle was initially driving south when he decided to turn left at the corner. He was unaware of the motorcyclist’s presence due to the lack of headlights, and struck the motorcycle with intense force.

The motorcyclist was seriously injured in the collision. He was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident, and was immediately taken to a local hospital. The man is still residing in the hospital, but doctors have told police he is expected to recover from his injuries.

Teen injured after struck in motorcycle accident

A teen was injured after he was struck but two cars in motorcycle accident.

According to Mason City Police, the accident occurred on Tuesday when an 81-year-old driver was attempting to turn left into St. James Lutheran Church for a funeral and he struck a 17-year-old who was traveling westbound on his motorcycle.

After the teen was struck by the first car, he was hit by a car driven by another funeral attendee. Neither drivers of the cars were injured, but the motorcyclist was taken to Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa to be treated.

Iowa man killed in motocycle accident

A 46-year-old motorcyclist from Pleasant Hill, Iowa was killed in a motorcycle accident last week.

The motorcyclist was traveling northbound on U.S. Highway 85 about 50 miles north of Lusk when he attempted to pass a pickup truck pulling a 28-foot camper trailer on the left. The driver of the truck began turning left onto Cheyenne River Road at the same time.

According to reports, the motorcycle collided with the vehicle near the front axles of the camper. The driver was thrown off of the motorcycle and was caught underneath the trailer until the driver of the truck came to a stop just off the highway.

The passengers of the truck were not injured. However, the motorcyclist died about an hour and a half after the time of the accident.

Man injured after motorcycle crash near Peterson

A man from Siouxland was injured after a motorcycle accident occurred on Highway 10 near Peterson.

According to Iowa State Patrol, the accident occurred as the man was driving his motorcycle down Highway 10 and he struck a deer near 155th Avenue.

The man was taken to Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in order to be treated for his injuryies. The current condition of the man is unknown at this time.

Motorcycle and deer collision injures two

A woman from Davenport suffered serious head injuries after the motorcycle she was riding on collided with a deer.

The 27-year-old woman was riding with her 28-year-old husband down Scott Park Road when their motorcycle collided with a deer. The woman was ejected from the bike on impact and was later airlifted to the University Hospitals to be treated for head injuries.

Her husband was also injured, but is said to be in stable condition at this time. Police have said that neither speed nor alcohol appear to be factors in the crash.

One injured, one killed in fatal motorcycle accident

One man was injured and another was killed after a motorcycle accident in Parkersburg.

According to Iowa State Patrol, a 30-year-old man was killed after a van attempted to make a left turn in front of a motorcycle and the two collided.

The accident occurred at 7 p.m. at the intersection of Highway 14-57 and Top Air Road. The van driver was injured, but the injuries were said to be non-life threatening injuries. The accident remains under investigation at this time.

Forest City man charged in fatal motorcycle accident

A man from Forest City has been charged with vehicular homicide after being involved in a serious motorcycle accident that took the life of one man.

According to the Globe Gazette, the accident occurred as the Forest City man was driving his car down the roadway when he suddenly crossed the center line for unknown reasons.

His vehicle then collided with an oncoming motorcycle causing the motorcyclist to be fatally injures. The accident occurred on Aug. 13, but the warrant for the man’s arrest was just issued last week. He was booked into the county jail on a $25,000 cash bond.

Motorcyclist injured in Iowa City crash

A man was injured after being involved in a motorcycle accident in Iowa City on Highway 218.

The accident occurred around 4 p.m. last week when emergency responders got a call reporting the accident. The motorcyclist was traveling southbound down the roadway when he lost control of the motorcycle for unknown reasons.

The motorcycle then veered off of the road and crashed into the grassy median in between the north and southbound traffic lanes. According to officials, the man did not suffer from life-threatening injuries, but he was transported to the hospital for further treatment.

Four motorcyclists killed in accident on I-29

Four people were killed in a tragic motorcycle accident on I-29 after a man hit them with his pickup truck.

The four men, three from Iowa and one from Nebraska, were struck head on by a 21-year-old man that crossed the center line while traveling on Interstate 29.

Three of the motorcyclists were pronounced dead at the scene and the other was flown to an Omaha hospital where he was later pronounced dead. The driver of the pickup truck was treated for minor injuries and later released. The accident closed the roadway in both directions for multiple hours.
