Iowa family of fatal crash victim sued two bars

The family of Kathlyn Leekley recently filed lawsuits against the two Iowa bars that were responsible for the intoxication of Bryan Cornwell that resulted in a fatal motorcycle crash, the Waterloo Cedar Falls Courier reported on May 23.

According to the lawsuits filed by Leekley’s family together with Derek Lee Martie last April, Heartland Acres Agribition Center and Bucketz Bar & Grill allowed the 22-year-old Oelwein resident to get drunk. The lawsuit also claimed that Heartland Acres was aware of Cornwell’s pattern of alcohol over-indulgence. Bryan had a blood alcohol level of 0.214 on June 22 when his pickup truck crossed a center line on Dubuque Road and collided with the motorcycle driven by Martie. Leekley, sitting behind Martie, was ejected from the motorcycle and died four days later, while Derek survived the crash in critical condition. In March, Cornwell was sentenced to 32 years behind bars after pleading guilty to the charges filed against him.
